Coach House, Toft, Cambridgeshire

Kitchen Extension

Working for Freeland Rees Roberts in 2002, the practice was commissioned to alter and extend an existing Grade II listed coach house in the conservation area in Toft.

A small, dark kitchen and dining room overlooked a splendid garden and the countryside. We converted these two rooms into a large, bright dining room and added a new kitchen extension on the flint gable end, incorporating two purpose made Oak Sliding folding doors, to utilise the views over the rural garden.

The Conservation officers considered the flint gable end wall to be the most precious remaining feature of the listed property and we had to come up with a design solution not to alter this wall. We designed the new kitchen, joining the old and new buildings by only a glass link. McCurdy and Co. built two beautiful green oak trusses, enabling us to exploit a double height kitchen in response to the nature of the coach house. We finished the gable end in flint, to complement the existing building.
